How Allied Health Assistants Support Everyday Progress

Hey there, Tribe!
One of the biggest questions I get from families and participants is: “How do I make the most of the plan I have, without sacrificing the quality of my care?”
It’s a valid worry. Professional appointment time is limited, travel can be disruptive, and there is rarely as much practice between sessions as everyone would like. That’s where Allied Health Assistants (AHAs) can help.
At Nurturing Hands Allied Health P/L, we’ve seen first-hand how the AHA model sits alongside a treating professional’s program and supports more regular practice.
The Financial Reality of NDIS Funding
Let’s talk numbers, because this is where AHA support genuinely changes what a plan can buy.
Under the NDIS pricing arrangements, an hour with an Allied Health Professional such as a Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist is typically $200 or more. An Allied Health Assistant is published at $86.79 an hour.
That different rate is why AHA support stretches a plan so much further. A budget that covers a professional session a fortnight can fund AHA-delivered program time every week, and often more than once a week. The treating professional still does the assessment, sets the goals and reviews progress — the AHA delivers the practice in between, at less than half the hourly rate.
Whether AHA support is claimable depends on the participant’s individual plan and funding arrangements, so it’s worth confirming with a support coordinator or plan manager. As a registered NDIS and TAC provider, we can walk you through what it means for your specific plan.
Consistency is where the change happens. Whether you’re working on mobility, communication, or daily living skills, practising regularly is what turns a program into a habit.

The Collaborative Model: How It Works
It’s important to understand how we work, because we do things a little differently at Nurturing Hands. We don’t employ Occupational Therapists (OTs) or Physiotherapists in-house, and we don’t perform Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs).
Instead, we are the bridge. We work in a collaborative care model.
You likely already have an external OT or Physio that you know and trust. They are the ones who write your professional reports and set your clinical goals. Our AHAs then step in to take that plan off the paper and put it into action. We work under the guidance and supervision of your external professionals to ensure that every exercise, every communication strategy, and every sensory activity is exactly what the expert ordered.
This means you keep your specialist for the big-picture stuff, but you use our AHAs for the boots-on-the-ground implementation. It’s a team approach that ensures no one is working in a silo.
Why Quality Matters: The AHANA Standard
One of the reasons people are sometimes hesitant about AHAs is that they worry about the “quality” of care compared to a professional.
The Allied Health Assistants’ National Association (AHANA) is the peak body for our industry. Our team members are AHANA members and work within their scope and training, with ongoing professional development. AHAs are not support workers: they are trained assistants who work to a professional program, and who understand the why behind the therapy.

Real-World Therapy in Your Environment
One of our core beliefs at Nurturing Hands is that therapy shouldn’t just happen in a sterile clinic room with fluorescent lights. Real life happens in the kitchen, at the local park, in the classroom, or at your workplace.
Our mobile therapy benefits are huge. When an AHA comes to your home, they are working with the actual tools you use every day. If your goal is to cook a meal independently, we don’t practice in a “pretend” kitchen: we use your stove and your utensils. If a child is struggling with school anxiety, we can work with them in their actual school environment (with the school’s permission, of course).
This is what we mean by practical support. It’s about moving beyond the clinical and into the functional. By practising in your natural environment, the “carry-over” (how well you remember and use the skills) is much higher. You don’t have to figure out how to translate a clinic exercise to your home life because you learned it at home in the first place!
Getting More Practice Into Your Week
With the recent reforms, there is a much bigger focus on “evidence-based” and “value-for-money” supports. AHA support sits well within that thinking: it is implementing a program a professional has already assessed and designed, at a published rate of $86.79 an hour rather than $200+.
If you are looking at your plan and wondering how to fit more regular practice into the week, it might be worth discussing the AHA model with your treating professional and support coordinator.
Here are a few ways our AHAs can help right now:
- Physical Support: Implementing exercise programs designed by your external Physiotherapist.
- Daily Living Skills: Working on routines, meal prep, and personal care strategies designed by your external OT.
- Communication: Practising speech and language exercises set by your external Speech Pathologist.
- Social Participation: Helping you get out into the community to practice social skills in real-time.

A Supportive, Lived-Experience Approach
I started Nurturing Hands because I know what it’s like to sit on your side of the table. Having lived experience of disability, I understand that some days are harder than others. I know that the NDIS can feel like a full-time job, and I know that you want people in your home who actually “get it.”
We aren’t a giant, faceless corporation. We are a supportive team. We choose our AHAs not just for their qualifications, but for their heart. We want people who are going to cheer you on when you hit a milestone and support you on the days when things feel a bit much.
Our approach is holistic. We don’t just see a “plan” or a “participant number”; we see a person with goals, dreams, and a family who cares about them.
